Description
After Israel attacked an aid flotilla sailing from Turkey to Gaza on May 31, Ankara is likely to either side with Syria and Iran in supporting Hamas, the Islamist de facto ruler of the Palestinian region, or join its Western allies in attempting to lift the Jewish state's siege there, the Beirut-based influential daily AN NAHAR said on June 11. "After the fierce and unprecedented conflict between Turkey and the government of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu over Israel's attack on the Freedom Flotilla, which was sailing to Gaza to break Israel's siege of the region, Turkey faces two major options," the newspaper said, quoting unnamed European diplomatic sources in Paris. "The first option is that Turkey adopts the stance of the Syrian-Iranian axis, which supports Hamas' separatist state in Gaza, thus pushing forward with the conflict with Israel on many levels and sending more ships to the region to break the Israeli siege and safeguard food, medical and humanitarian supplies to the region's inhabitants, irrespective of repercussions," the daily's diplomatic editor, Abdel-Karim Abul-Nasr, wrote.
